Jaffa Recommends - Mindless Self Indulgence

You know what really makes you feel good when going through the final phases of a break up? A little electro-punk. That’s why, for me, Mindless Self Indulgence is the right kind of anger management therapy at the right time (or all time).

Hard hitting and hella sarcastic, just like papa likes it. This is the kind of A.D.H.D. inducing electro-trauma cum punk rock that really drives you mad, in a good way. Many’a times I’ve been riding in the car with my (hetero) friend Juice Box and we’ve found ourselves pumping our fists and screaming out lyrics like “Faggot faggot faggot FAGGOT!” It’s the kind of music that really amps you up.

Not Your Battle

A woman claims that after leaving a bar with a man she had met, she was raped behind a factory. She files a police report and later gets an admission out of him via email which she uses in the case against him. This man, a member of a touring band, is arrested following a show. His bands fans immediately show their support of him.

Another man goes to the home of a woman he previously had a thing with. The woman’s new man, angry at the way this he’s dealing with his feelings, confronts him. After words are shared the new man follows the other to an underground parking lot and in a fight is killed. It turns out the man who killed the other is in another popular band and once his fans catch wind of what happened begin rallying support for him as well. Eventually he gets off on a self-defense clause.

These are the stories of Dominic Davi of Love Equals Death, and Tony Lovato formerly of Mest respectably. Both news breaks occurring within the same week.

Can an Out Of The Closet Pop Star Be Successful?

There’s quite an interesting article in today’s Idolator about the sexuality of recent pop star Mika. It begs the question: Can pop stars be gay and successful? Discuss!

Jaffa Recommends - GO!

Go Logo Raw, hard, straight ahead New York hardcore. The kind of shit I absolutely LOVE. The kind of music that only sounds better at a show with shout-a-longs and a bad ass circle pit. GO! is this kind of band, and so it’s no surprise that I fucking love GO!

Originally from around between 1989 and 1991, GO! has reformed in wonderful New York, New York to bring the good people the good rock.

” GO! was about an awful lot, but we were so fucking sarcastic that I think it made it all alright. We were anti- all the bad stuff - racism, sexism, homophobia, violence at shows - and pro- all the good stuff: low-priced all-ages shows, equality for women, equal rights and respect for gay and lesbian people, essentially having respect for other people in general. Plus we had serious ditties like “Milk does your body good” and “The A-Train.” And we kinda rocked out, too - so there you have it. “

With songs like Fear Of A Gay Planet and Victim Of Civilization and many more downloadable for free on their website, with a few more on myspace, I highly recommend this for you punk rock heads out there.

Me And My Mohawk, My Mohawk And I

I. Love. My. Mohawk.

Having had hair for the better portion of my life, I forget how nice it feels to shave it off. I’d done it some in high school. A mohawk, then grow it out. Shave it, grow it out. After a while I couldn’t do the things I wanted with my hair and keep up with my I-don’t-care facade. Not to mention the cost of razors, the time it consumed, and the TV I missed while doing it.

Don’t even get my started on bleaching and dying.

Jaffa Recommends - Skinjobs

SkinjobsWe’re queer and we’re recruiting!

It’s a call to arms by a band with an authoritative voice. Powerful anthems for the queer and the gender fucked. A decree to Burn Your Rainbow and be more than ‘color-by-numbers.’

I first heard of this band on a fan page on myspace. They only had two songs on their page, and up until I was finally able to pick up their album at Benways in Santa Monica had I heard any more than those. But from that first song I heard on I was a fan.

I’m actually listening to their album, titled Burn Your Rainbow, as I write this. Songs of queer crusades, identity, and gender bending make up most of this completely amazing indie punk album. Alongside the outstanding music are spoken word pieces; most of which written by others within the queer community. All of this together makes for a very powerful album.

Unfortunately, as happens with many bands, the Skinjobs are no more. But you can still find their album online if you know where to look. CDBaby, Spitshine Records, Bongo Beat, and Agit-Prop all offer the album. Hell, you can even find it on the iTunes store if you have it. So there’s no excuse not to check this band out. Even if they’re dead and gone, their music lives on and means no less than before.

Youth Of Togay legal woes, kicked off Myspace

FNS Records reports:

Bridge9 Records and Have Heart have filed a Copyright Violation to Myspace in regards to YOUTH OF TOGAY’s Myspace page. Myspace in turn has deleted their page without investigation.

Their complaint states that YOTG’s cover of Have Hearts “The Machinist” and the parody art of their album “The Things We Carry” have been illegally used. YOTG had recently posted the new track “The Gaychinist” from their upcoming single “The Dongs We Bury”.

Cover songs, rerecorded by YOTG, and other parody artists are protected legally by The Fair Use Act of 1976 . This law protects artists, cartoonists and musicians. High profile artists like Mad Magazine, Weird Al Yankovic and Bansky survive and are protected in their artistic en devours by this law, as is YOTG.

Youth of Togay now has a page at Pure Volume which can be viewed HERE

Thanks for your support!
