There’s quite an interesting article in today’s Idolator about the sexuality of recent pop star Mika. It begs the question: Can pop stars be gay and successful? Discuss!

First off, I can’t help but be mildly offended by their statement “But we did chat with some gay friends (and trust us, they are chatty).” Just seems like yet another stereotype in the guise of playfulness.
When it comes to being out in ‘07, though? I don’t know for sure how people would react, seeing as social segues are still really shakey right now. But what if someone WERE to come out? Not AFTER they’ve made all their records sales as Lance Bass or, hell, any of the few musicians who came out after their careers were set. What if during that whole Fallout Boy gay controversy that the guy was like “Okay, yeah, I’m gay” or bi or heteroflexible or any form of queer. What would that have done? I’m not saying they are because honestly I don’t know and have no place in saying, but never the less what would that have done? I think now, if ever, is the time for a little social experimentation to occur.
