Jeremy Recommends - Girl In A Coma

Note: Changing the name from Jaffa Recommends to Jeremy Recommends.

So it’s been a while since the last Jeremy Recommends; a variety of things causing that, but it’s one thing that brings me back to it today; Girl In A Coma.

Hauntingly beautiful. Those are the first two words that come to mind when trying to describe this bands style. I could say they’re reminiscent of Morrisey, Sleater-Kinney, or a gorgeous hybrid of shoegazer and riot grrrl rock; and I’d be right, I think. But that still would fail to describe the style of this band.

Hauntingly beautiful. Even that doesn’t quite cut it. There’s a powerful sense of positive energy behind the vocals, and cut-throat musicianship to match. They’re a unique force of music to be reckoned with, that much is for sure.

Signed to Joan Jett’s Blackheart Record Group, Girl In A Coma is constantly on tour. If you’re in LA make sure to check them out on the LA Pride main stage June 10th.

Russian police detain gays as punches fly

By Guy Faulconbridge

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian nationalists shouting “death to homosexuals” punched and kicked demonstrators calling for the right to hold a Gay Pride parade in central Moscow on Sunday while riot police detained dozens of gay protesters.

Two European parliamentarians were among those held as they tried to present a petition asking Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who has called gay marches satanic acts, to lift a ban on the parade.

Nationalists and extreme Russian Orthodox believers held icons and denounced homosexuality as “evil” while a group of thick-set young men turned up with surgeon’s masks, which they said would protect them from the “gay disease”.

Most Hated Family In America

Fred Phelps has been fairly ubiquitous lately with him being covered picketing the funerals of soldiers, and recently stating that his family will picket the funeral of fellow douche bag Jerry Falwell. The BBC recently had a one hour special with Louis Theroux where he spends a several days inside the Westboro Baptist Church compound.

The video is quite long but well worth watching.

Senses Fail’s New Video

Even though this song is awesome and the band is incredible as always, I’m posting their new video for ”Can’t Be Saved” for its quite original storyline. I won’t steal punchlines, but if you’re just a bit smarter than me you’ll figure out.

Exile In Guyville, book review

Exile In GuyvilleExile In Guyville by Dave White
How a punk rock redneck faggot Texan moved to West Hollywood and refused to be shiny and happy

I remember reading Adam’s review of this book a while back when I first started coming to this site. It looked interesting enough to me, the premise had sure enough peaked my interest. The fact that it was based on true events was just icing on this enticing literary sponge cake. But sadly I never did put much effort in seeking it out.

That was a mistake.

Gay Bash By Mélange Lavonne

Some of you might give me flack for posting a hip-hop video on queerPUNKS.com, but it’s a great song with a heart-tugging (fictional) story. Queer hip-hop is slowly on the rise, kids. You’ve got to support your brothers and sisters in the struggle.

Rise Above: The Tribe 8 Documentary review

Rise Above - The Tribe 8 Documentary

The story of these five women who came together under the flag of Punk-Fucking-Rock is nothing short of astounding. Tracy Flannigan’s documentary on the antics and trials of the San Francisco dyke punk band Tribe 8 brings us into the lives Lynn Breedlove, Silas Howard, Slade Bellum, Lynn ‘Tantrum’ Payne, and Leslie Mah.

Told through interviews, high energy imagery and music we’re told the story of women just trying to have fun. But once you scratch the surface we find that each woman’s personal lives are laced with hardships as individual as each of them. Sobriety, race and gender issues, being ostracized by your peers, and losing loved ones. These are the stories that make this doc all the more worth watching.

Great music, energetic editing, and a healthy helping of live performance footage (not to mention on-stage male-to-female blowjobs) combined with the interesting lives of the women involved make this a documentary definately worth checking out.

Lead singer of The Haunted gets massage in gay sauna

The lead signer for Roadrunner Records’ The Haunted tells his tale of getting a massage at a gay sauna, his preconceived notions, and his transformation.

What’s really disturbing are the comments made after the post. It goes to show that there’s a long way to go before the GLBT community is accepted in the metal/hardcore/metalcore scene.

“The massage is great. Pierre is iron hands and really good at what he does. I tell him about my band and that we just played a good show and that this is my first at the Gay Sauna. I tell him this casually, not wanting to come off as the complete moron I realize I am at this moment. Pierre laughs and quickly states, ‘Ah, so you’re not gay, are you?’ I tell him honestly that I haven’t got a clue, but that I’m married to what I believe is a woman and that she’s given birth to my two kids with me holding her hand. But I’m nevertheless sick of letting my preconceived notions run my life, besides I really need the massage.”
