There are times that I’ve heard so much about a band and how great they are that I have develop a resistance to them. Not their music, but my willingness to give them a shot. And it’s not for any good reason either, I just have an apprehension that the music won’t be able to match the hype and I get put off. i did this to Wilco, I did it with AFI, and I did it to Mika Miko.
The first time I remember hearing the name Mika Miko was at a Limp Wrist shirt I went to a while back. I was with my friend Kyle in the back and he kept looking over my shoulder. I asked him what he was looking at and his response was “I think I see two girls from Mika Miko making out with each other.”
I looked over my shoulder to see two petite girls that looked like they were trying to reprise the 70s punk style locking lips and swapping spit. “Who’s Mika Miko?” I asked, unphased.
“Only the most amazing thing ever!” And that’s where I began my apprehension to the band.
I still don’t know if those girls from that show were actually from Mika Miko, nor if they’re gay; doesn’t matter, because after the long battle I put up to NOT hear them I finally broke down last night and went to their myspace.
Mika Miko is a group of five girls who play energetic and fun 70s style punk rock. Think X-Ray Spex meets X and has an orgy with The Germs. It’s just that awesome. My favorite thing from what I’ve seen so far is that one of their two singers shouts into an old telephone-turned-to-mic.
They’re on tour right now, I’m talking world-wide. If ever there’s been a chance for you to see them it’s now. Go to their site and look up the dates, I’m sure their shows are not to be missed (I won’t miss their next one for damned sure).
