The Dead Betties - Nightmare Sequence

The Dead Betties
Nightmare SequenceMy cat Grenadine loves this album. Mind you, this cat is not one of those awesome rock-loving felines you occasionally come across at one of your stoner friends house. This thing is utterly insane. She’s the kind that hisses at you for being near her, will attack my other cat Indya after an hour of cuddling, and snaps her jaws on your finger if you so much as think of picking her up. But here she is, cuddled up right next to me and my laptop while I blast this album.

This isn’t the first time she’s cuddled next to me while listening to this either.

So this goes to show you that music really can soothe the savage beast. At least when said savageness is reflected in the music itself.

Recently signed to Cordless/Warner Bros., The Dead Betties is still a band difficult to define. If you remember my recommendation back in february the closest I came to any definition was ‘a distortion of what you may find in grunge or any near-no wave bands.’ This still holds true.

Their latest album, Nightmare Sequence, has an incredible range and blend of sounds. From the ethereal dreamy quality of the seven minute long Chicago to the ferocious tempo-shifting Demoralizer you’re constantly kept on your toes, unsure of where this band is going to take you next.

Listening to this reminds me of the one time I was fortunate enough to catch this band live. Their ferocity and tenacity on stage was combined with the theatrics one can only find from a savage art-rock band diving headlong into a chaotic binge of guitars and destruction. Though that, my friends, is incredibly prevalent in the recordings available on this album.

If you want to get your hands on a copy of this album you better get your credit cards ready because this baby is only available online via digital download on iTunes, Rhapsody, and Napster. And let me tell you, it’s definitely worth it.
