This past friday I checked out a local music fest on the outskirts of L.A. where one of my friends bands were playing. Said friend told me a lot of bands would be playing, all but one other I hadn’t heard of before. You know how local shows are. Anyway, as I was getting ready to go my sister asks what I’m up to.

I tell her, “Going to a show.”

“Oh, where at?”

“It’s an outdoor fest down the street.”

She lit up. “Oh, my friend’s band is playing! They’re called A Pretty Mess.”

And this is where we get to the good part.

Right out the gate these girls rock. Hell, they pretty much blew half the bands out of the water if you ask me. I mean, shit, they put on a pretty fun show and best of all they sound awesome.

They’re punk rock, plain and simple. None of this riot grrrl stuff that oft times goes into the down tempo almost folk spectrum of rock. No, they’d much rather beat you into a stupor with the blasting drums, hard riffs, and guttural barking. And they do an awesome job of that.

They have a grip of shows coming up in the LA area, so if you’re ’round those parts you should seriously check them out. Oh, and if you do tell the bassist Jessica that Carissa’s brother says ‘hi’ (and don’t worry about feeling all ‘high school’ when you do).
